Urgent Drought Warning Issued in New Jersey

Per a report shared by the Middletown Patch titled "Drought Warning In Fire Ravaged NJ, Murphy Urges Water Conversation," by Michelle Rotuno-Johnson on Nov 13, 2024. Officials in New Jersey have formally announced a drought warning due to wildfires damaging forests and reservoirs are starting to evaporate. Residents of New Jersey are being advised to reduce water consumption, as stated by the Governor and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Commissioner Shawn LaTourette on Wednesday. The drought warning enables the DEP to oversee water systems more closely, regulating releases from reservoirs and adjusting the flow of certain waterways to provide for the areas most affected by the drought. "A warning" is the step "right before a drought emergency," which is the most severe declaration the state can issue, leading to mandatory, phased restrictions on specific water uses. Meanwhile, residents are requested to conserve water. The Impact of Misunderstanding: A 13-Year-Old's Arrest Over a Stuffed Animal

Ooltewah Middle School Tennesse --- According to a report by Lisa Larson-Walker on Nov 14, 2024, titled "A 13-year-old with autism was arrested after his backpack sparked fear. Only his stuffed bunny was inside," a 13-year-old African American boy with autism was arrested at a Tennessee school because his toy bunny was mistaken for a bomb. The boy's name is anonymous so we will call him Ty per Walker's report. Ty had brought his beloved bunny to school for comfort, as he has autism and finds solace in it. When Ty expressed concern about his backpack being checked, school officials became alarmed and involved the police, who handcuffed and arrested him despite finding only the bunny in his bag.
The incident occurred due to a state law mandating felony charges for any school threat of mass violence, regardless of credibility. Concerns were raised by advocates about the potential harm to students with disabilities like Ty, who may exhibit disruptive behavior due to their conditions. Although Ty has an intellectual disability in addition to autism, law enforcement did not consider this before arresting him. Data revealed that a significant number of students with disabilities were arrested for similar threats in the district, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the law.
