Contrasting Campaign Strategies: Harris vs. Trump in the 2024 Election

October 16, 2024

Politics

In the final weeks of the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump are implementing different strategies to win. Per a report shared by Lisa Lerer, Julie Bosman, Kellen Browning, Maya King, and Jonathan Weisman titled "The Ground Game: Harris's Turnout Machines vs. Trump's Unproven Alliance" on October 14, 2024, of The New York Times, shares that Harris's campaign is focusing on a traditional field operation while Trump's campaign is targeting less frequent voters and relying on outside groups. The N.Y. Times report further shares that the Harris campaign has a more extensive staff and prioritizes local outreach, while Trump's efforts have raised questions about effectiveness. Both campaigns emphasize the importance of reaching every voter in the closely contested battleground states. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/13/us/politics/trump-harris-campaign-ground-game.html?auth=login-google1tap&login=google1tap

How Harris's Approach Could Help Her Win:

This approach can help Harris win by focusing on a comprehensive ground game strategy. By deploying a large number of paid staff to organize and turn out every possible vote, the Harris campaign aims to engage with voters locally, making the national discourse feel more personal and relevant. This localized approach can effectively break through a fractured media environment and reach voters who may otherwise tune out politics altogether. Additionally, by prioritizing direct voter contact through door-knocking and phone calls, the campaign can mobilize its supporters and ensure that every ballot counts. This strategy aims to connect with voters across various modes and ultimately secure the support needed to win the election.

How Trump's Approach Can Be Seen As A Gamble:

Trump's methods may be less effective due to the reliance on a smaller universe of less frequent voters and inexperienced outside groups. By targeting a narrower demographic and relying on outside groups to reach a broader swath of voters, the campaign may face challenges in mobilizing a wide support base. Additionally, as described, the campaign's approach may have a different level of local presence and direct voter engagement than the Harris campaign, potentially making it more challenging to connect with voters personally. The focus on less frequent voters, along with questions about the effectiveness of the Republican effort in pivotal counties, could pose challenges in turning out the necessary support to win the election.
