CALIFORNIA WON'T BLACK DOWN!

The fight for Black citizen's access to Reparations Continues!

Per a story by Jason Lewis of the Los Angeles Standard Newspaper titled The fight for reparations in California continues. The California State Assembly did not vote on two historic reparation bills proposed by California Senator Steven Bradford—the bills aimed to create a Freedmen Affairs Agency and a fund for reparations and reparative justice. Governor Newsom's office sent amendments to authorize further study on the issue, but Bradford declined, stating that the bills had enough support to pass. This decision led to heated confrontations within Black communities, prompting grassroots organizations to hold town hall meetings and a press conference to express their discontent. The California Legislative Black Caucus received backlash from Californians and nationwide, leading to an emergency town hall meeting where State Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, who serves parts of South Los Angeles and Mid City Los Angeles, addressed the community.

The decision for California's Legislative Black Caucus to not bring two transformative bills, SB1403 and SB 1331, to a vote, has sparked anger and disappointment within the reparations movement. Kamilah Moore, chair of the California Reparations Task Force, expressed dismay at this decision and directed anger at Governor Newsom and the California Legislative Black Caucus. There is speculation that the Democratic Party's timing concerns may have influenced the decision. Still, activists remain committed to the reparations movement and are encouraged by the progress made by grassroots organizations. Attorney and reparations activist Cheryce Cryer expressed disappointment with the caucus's decision but remains hopeful about the national and international attention on the issue. To get involved with the reparations movement in California, various organizations such as the Coalition for a Just and Equitable California (CJEC) and Black Lives Matter-Los Angeles are recommended.
