About East Orange & The Echo's February Black Beauty Ashanti Smith!

East Orange, NJ, is famously known as the home base of music legends like Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, and Dana Elaine Owens (Queen Latifah.) As Ashanti navigates the complexities of her profession and community, she offers invaluable perspectives on society's pressing issues. Ashanti began her journey in East Orange, where her passion for education was ignited at a young age. "Teaching is not just a job for me; it's a calling," she says, reflecting on the influence she hopes to have on her students. Her approach to teaching blends empathy, creativity, and critical thinking, helping her students develop the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world. In light of recent events, Echo News TV LLC sat down with Ashanti to discuss the current education landscape and her thoughts on pressing social matters. When asked about educators' challenges today, she articulated a clear vision. "We are living in times that demand adaptability. The pandemic highlighted the disparities in our education system, and we must address these inequities head-on," Ashanti remarked. "As teachers, we must advocate for our students and ensure they have the resources they need to succeed."

Ashanti's insights extend beyond the classroom. With the recent rise in social justice movements nationwide, she emphasized the importance of civic engagement among young people. "Being aware and involved in current events is vital. Our voices matter, and we need to use them to influence change," she stated. Her commitment to activism resonates with many, bridging the gap between education and the real-world implications of political and social issues.

When addressing the current climate in New Jersey and the nation, Ashanti highlighted both concerns and potential solutions. "We are facing significant challenges, from economic disparities to public safety. However, I firmly believe that we can build a better future through community collaboration," she said. "Engaging local leaders, parents, and students in discussions will help us find common ground and develop actionable steps toward progress."

When asked these questions, Ashanti provided seasoned wisdom plus clear concerns that will assist readers in better understanding the seriousness of current events and happenings.

1. How do you believe the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement informs current social justice movements today?

Miss. Ashanti Smith

The Civil Rights Movement played a massive role in establishing organized protest in this country. Today, many organizations from diverse backgrounds use protesting strategies that emulate the Civil Rights Movement. I like to think of the Civil Rights Movement as the forefather of modern-day activism.

2. What role can educators play in promoting awareness and understanding of issues like police brutality?

Miss. Ashanti Smith

Educators play a critical role in creating awareness and fostering understanding of police brutality, especially in communities where these issues are deeply felt. Ways that educators can shed light on social injustices like police brutality by:

  • Incorporate Social Justice Topics: Integrate lessons on systemic racism, policing history, and civil rights into history, government, and literature classes.

  • Teach Critical Thinking: Encourage students to analyze police brutality through data, case studies, and legal frameworks to understand its root causes.

  • Highlight Black Resistance & Reform Efforts: Show students how activists, lawyers, and scholars have fought for police reform and justice.

  • Facilitate Open Conversations: Encourage students to share their thoughts, fears, and personal experiences regarding law enforcement.

3. What are some of the most pressing social justice issues that need immediate attention, and how can individuals address these challenges?

Miss. Ashanti Smith

Some of the most pressing social justice issues that need immediate attention are systematic racism in healthcare, legislation, and education, as well as mass deportation and mass incarceration. As regular citizens, our power lies in understanding our democracy, how it works, and using our votes in exchange for our political progression. I am a firm believer that the Black vote should not be free, and we as a community must demand that we have legislation that is specifically geared toward Black progress in the country, something that is long overdue.

4. Can you share any personal experiences that have shaped your understanding of social justice and equality?

Miss. Ashanti Smith

My understanding of social justice and equality, or the lack thereof, comes from my very real upbringing. Growing up as a Black child in the inner city gave me a clear perspective on our community's need for social liberation. Additionally, earning my Bachelor's in Political Science/Criminal Justice at Saint Peter's University and pursuing a juris doctor degree have given me the knowledge to understand social justice and equality.

5. How can communities of color support one another in navigating the ongoing struggles for justice and equality?

Miss. Ashanti Smith

Communities of color should first understand that we are allies. Though our fights differ, we are all essentially fighting for the same thing: our freedom and a better world for the generations after us. Communities of color can work together for a more just and equitable democracy.
