Federal Funding Blocked for Black Belt Sewer Crisis:

A Struggle for Environmental Justice

According to a report by Lurie Daniels--Favor, an activist, author, and attorney who currently serves as the Executive Director at the Center for Law and Social Justice at Medgar Evers College in New York. Shares that the Biden-Harris administration who sought to provide federal funds to address sewer and water access issues in rural Black communities, specifically in the Black Belt region of Alabama and Mississippi. Has been blocked by the Trump Administration per Favor's Youtube Channel report on April 22, 2025. https://www.youtube.com/live/l4WnOo_0_qk?si=LI3eyOQkEy4VJ5wL

Communities throughout the country are facing a loss of federal funding that supports environmental justice initiatives aimed at reducing the health impacts of pollution and other dangers in historically marginalized communities. The Trump administration has aimed at these programs to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion -- often referred to as D.E.I. -- initiatives. Per an report provided by Willy Blackmore of The Word In Black Racial Equality Report on Feb 15, 2024 titled Feds Are Finally Taking Action on Alabama’s Black Belt Sewer Crisis shares that the intervention was apart of the EPA's Closing the Water Access Gap program, that would have benefit 150 communities that have long faced neglect and poor infrastructure as a result of racism. Per Blackmore report "many septic systems in the Black Belt are failing, leading residents to resort to harmful practices like “straight piping” waste into their yards. The Biden Harris initiative aimed to improve sanitary conditions and restore dignity to these underserved communities, addressing a critical public health issue exacerbated by the area's unsuitable soil for waste absorption.

According to one study, some 90% of septic systems in the Black Belt either do not function well or are outright failing. Per Blackmore and Favors, when septic systems fail, people who can’t afford the thousands of dollars to replace them often resort to “straight piping”: getting rid of waste through a length of PVC pipe connected from the bathroom toilet straight into the backyard." Where children might play, and flowers might grow. Per Blackmore, "This approach releases untreated waste containing harmful pathogens such as E. coli bacteria onto the open grass, close to areas where children play, and flowers flourish. The region's heavy clay soil, which once made it a prominent cotton-producing area before the Civil War and a center for the Black citizen population since emancipation, struggles to absorb this waste, exacerbating the issue." As a result stagnant pools of waste draw in flies and mosquitoes that can transmit infectious diseases like hookworm and yellow fever.

Pope Francis' Environmental Legacy:

Advocating for Climate Action and Social Justice

Pope Francis leaves a significant environmental legacy as the Vatican prepares for his funeral and discussions on his successor begin. He consistently advocated for climate action and urged followers to be responsible stewards of the Earth, often criticizing the role of wealthy nations and capitalism in exacerbating the climate crisis. Nathan Schneider, a media studies professor and writer for America magazine, report titled 'Remembering Pope Francis on Earth Day: How He Linked Capitalism, Climate & Catholicism:' highlights how Pope Francis combined Christian tradition with global social movements to address this crisis. The late pontiff emphasized that solving environmental issues requires addressing human justice and the disposability of both the planet and people. The Alarming Implications of Deporting US Citizens to Foreign Prisons

In a report by Kim Wehle titled Trump Is Serious About Sending US Citizens to an El Salvador Prison. That Should Worry Us All, Joe Rogan, per Wehle's report, criticizes the Trump administration's alarming policy of deporting US citizens to an El Salvador supermax prison, bypassing Constitutional protections like the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause. On C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, discussions reveal a troubling acceptance among many Americans of this erosion of due process as a result of mass illegal migration orchestrated by the Christian Coalition over the last 50 or so years. Per Wehle, Rogan warns of the dangers of normalizing such practices, questioning the ultimate goal of the Trump administration's indiscriminate use of these tactics that initially seem to target illegally insourced gang members but could ultimately and dangerously target bona fide American citizens without court proceedings, such as in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/kilmar-abrego-garcia-deported-el-salvador-trump-immigration-what-know-rcna201708

This orchestrated violation of the Constitution could ultimately exploit Black citizens by aligning them with immigrant populations who actually broke Federal immigration laws, with both Democratic and Republican nonprofit assistance. A move that could effectively treat both populations as modern-day slaves--a fate Black citizens did not choose, just like their African ancestors did not choose to come to North America as a result of chattel slavery.

Democratic and Hispanic organizations are relying on Black citizens for advocacy, despite being the primary factor possibly leading vulnerable Black citizen populations back to a possible life of enslavement in another country. All backed by the Christian Coalition's Manchurian candidate, Donald Trump. That large populations of Hispanics, once becoming eligible to vote, voted in not one time but twice successfully against the advice of Black citizens and certain clergy. This re-establishment of systems reminiscent of the slave trade, facilitated by insourced Hispanic communities from countries like El Salvador, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, is unknown to most Black citizens for the last 50 years. Rogan previously emphasized the need for careful immigration policies to prevent criminals from entering the country. The report questions the legality of Trump’s actions and whether US citizens who have become exposed to insourced gang propaganda as unsupervised children may ultimately join current populations in outsourced prisons or concentration camps as adults paid for by the American taxpayers unknowingly. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/02/trump-joe-rogan-deportations
