U.S. Rep. Chris Smith Urges Defense Department to Address Drone Threats in New Jersey
Ocean County NJ: U.S. Rep. Chris Smith is calling on the Defense Department to address the "potential threat" from drone activity over New Jersey after reports of drones following a U.S. Coast Guard vessel and flying onshore from the Atlantic Ocean. In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Smith expressed concern over the proximity of these unidentified drones to sensitive sites and critical infrastructure, including Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Smith, alongside Ocean County Sheriff Michael Mastronardy, witnessed a Coast Guard officer's report of drones closely trailing a Coast Guard boat off Barnegat Light. Additionally, 50 drones were reportedly seen flying onshore from a boat. Despite having the capability to identify and neutralize these drones, the Defense Department lacks the authority to do so. Smith is alarmed by the potential threats, suggesting possible foreign involvement.
