Press Release

Kevin Richardson Calls for a Donald Trump apology and for America to consider ethical character when going to the polls Harlem, NY (September 7, 2024) - A good leader should have integrity, self-awareness, courage, respect, compassion, and resilience. A leader should be able to influence others while communicating their vision, showing gratitude, and collaborating effectively. Charged by his recent appearance at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Richardson is motivated to highlight the critical importance of character and ethics as part of America's voting decision in the upcoming Presidential election. Kevin Richardson, a member of the Exonerated Five and CEO of the Kevin Richardson Foundation, publicly calls for former President Donald Trump to apologize for his unscrupulous actions and unethical leadership against the nation and the wrongfully accused teens. With the importance of the upcoming election, Richardson is actively campaigning to raise voter awareness. He stresses the importance of exercising the right to vote and addressing voter suppression issues, which disproportionately affect marginalized communities. “Voting is a fundamental right and a critical part of our democracy. We must all participate to ensure our voices are heard and our future is shaped by those who truly represent and respect us,” states Richardson. On stage, alongside Rev. Al Sharpton and other members of The Exonerated Five, Korey Wise highlighted Trump's damaging role in their wrongful convictions. In 1989, Trump spent $85,000 on full-page ads in the New York Times calling for the execution of the five innocent teenagers, who were later exonerated. Despite DNA evidence and a confession from the true perpetrator, Trump has refused to apologize for his actions.

“The impact of Trump’s actions and misuse of the press was devastating,” stated Richardson. “We served a total of 41 years in prison for crimes we did not commit, and to this day, Trump has never acknowledged his wrongdoing. Richardson firmly believes, "his inability to admit he was wrong speaks volumes about his character and qualifications for public office." Richardson is urging Trump to not only apologize but also to make a symbolic gesture by donating $85,000 to the Innocence Project—the same amount Trump spent on the ads calling for their execution.

This gesture would demonstrate a commitment to justice and reconciliation. Last year, Kevin launched the Kevin Richardson Foundation LLC (KRF) as a platform for social responsibility, justice reform, and to assist in building transformative futures. Kevin and the KRF team members are dedicated to sharing a message of hope, ethics, respect, and empowerment through diverse offerings including; public advocacy, speaking engagements, content creation, and impactful philanthropic endeavors. Kevin Richardson and the Exonerated Five's story is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles against wrongful convictions and systemic injustice. As they continue their advocacy, they urge everyone to engage in the electoral process, support reforms that protect voting rights, and consider moral character as part of their presidential selection.
