Kean Stage Press Release
Community Event
UNION, N.J. - Kean Stage presents Afrique en Cirque by Cirque Kalabanté on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at Wilkins Theatre, 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, New Jersey 07083.
Afrique en Cirque is a show by Yamoussa Bangoura, inspired by daily life in Guinea. This performance shares the beauty, youth and artistry of African culture. A colorful show beyond its scenery, costumes and staging, it makes any theatre vibrate with energy and represents the strength, agility and life’s joys of young Africans. The audience will see acrobats execute gravity-defying moves and human pyramids, accompanied by the contemporary sounds of live Afro-Jazz, percussion, and kora.
Yamoussa Bangoura, a multidisciplinary artist of Guinean origin, created Kalabanté Productions. Yamoussa’s dream was to found a school of circus arts and direct his own multidisciplinary company specializing in African arts. In the early 2000s, Yamoussa was recruited to come to Canada with Cirque Eloize, a Montreal-based Canadian cirque company. While in Canada, he performed with Cirque du Soleil and Cavalia (a cirque with horses). In 2007, Yamoussa realized his dream and opened his own company, Kalabanté Productions, in Montreal, Canada. He recruited many of his extended family members to join the company, including his twin sisters, brothers, and cousins.
The company began performing shows in Quebec and has since expanded to all of Canada and the USA and performs worldwide. In 2018, Kalabante opened its own studio and school in Montreal, offering classes in African dance, cirque, and drumming. Kalabante Productions is proud to share its work, achievements and skills to inspire others and assist with the humanitarian mission to help the Guinean community from which Yamoussa and many of its company members come.
Tickets for Afrique en Cirque range from $29-$49 and can be purchased online at keanstage.com or by contacting the Box Office at (908) 737-7469. The Box Office is currently open Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
